Kerwin Court celebrates opening of new sensory courtyard

The team at Kerwin Court recently invited members of the local community to a celebration for their new sensory courtyard.

They wanted to thank people and businesses who had generously given their time, or donated materials or funds, towards the beautiful new courtyard space.

The people we support have already been making the most of the new courtyard.

Support from the local community

Earlier in the year, we shared with you about the courtyard transformation project at Kerwin Court, our neurological centre in Slinfold, near Horsham – and how the local community had come together to provide support. Local businesses donated plants and more, gave us trade price on topsoil, and the community gave their time and expertise to help with design, cleaning and planting.

We also received a generous grant of £1,500 towards the project, from the John Laing Charitable Trust.

Thank you for making a difference

The opening of the courtyard coincided with the recent heatwave – however despite the blazing temperatures, there was still a great turn-out from volunteers who had supported the project.

The occasion began with a wonderful spread from our chef and catering team at Kerwin Court, who said: “We wanted to thank everyone for everything they have done!”

There were guests from a local garden group, who had advised and helped with the project; our wonderful volunteer drivers, and members of the Slinfold Community Shed, who have provided much support at Kerwin Court.

We were also joined by The Cut Flower Garden, which is located over the road from the service, and who had very kindly donated plants and flowers for the space.

Sara Goldstone, Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist, thanked everyone for all the kindness and support they had shown. “We really appreciate the hours you put in. Without you, this would not have been possible!

“The new courtyard will contribute to helping us deliver the best rehab we can, and ensure that people have the best quality of life while they are with us.”

Special features for a relaxing space

There is a feeling of relaxation and calm in the space – enhanced by the beautiful feature fountain (in our main photo above), which was very kindly donated in memory of one of our previous residents, who has sadly passed away. We were honoured that his partner could also join us for the courtyard opening, to see the fountain in place.

Volunteer Matt, who had advised on the design for the garden, has included plenty of purples, and there will be a variety of wonderful scents for people to enjoy as the borders and flowerbeds grow.

There is also a special feature fence, made by one of the residents following advice from the Cut Flower Garden.

Jenny Rennison, Therapy Assistant, told us how the residents had been enjoying the space prior to the heatwave – spending time in the garden when they may previously have opted to stay indoors. Jenny shared how a podcast by Dr Michael Mosley, talking about the rehabilitation benefits of a garden, had inspired the project.

We are excited to see the garden grow and for it to enhance the rehabilitation and care we offer for the people we support at Kerwin Court.

Thank you from all of us at Brainkind, to everyone who has supported this project, giving your time, funds and materials – for your generosity, and all you have shared to make this project come to life:
