“I have had the privilege of supporting countless people” – Michelle celebrates 20 years at Brainkind

In September, Michelle Bailey, Service Manager at Fen House, our neurological centre in Ely, celebrated a milestone in her career – her 20-year anniversary since starting work at Brainkind.

Our photo shows Michelle, on the right, accepting her long service award from Roxanne Rolland, Regional Manager.

Michelle shares the story of her journey through 20 years of service, and what it has meant to her.

“I started working at Fen House on 18 September, 2006. At the time, my plan was to stay for around six months, gain some experience in care, and then go to university to train as a midwife. As it turns out, life had very different plans for me.

“I still remember my first day as though it were yesterday. I played Scrabble, helped bake a cake, and spent time getting to know the people we support. It was a simple day, but one that left a lasting impression. From that moment on, I found myself drawn into a career that would become far more meaningful than I could ever have imagined.

“Over the years, I progressed through a number of roles within the service. I became a Crisis Prevention and Intervention trainer, took on shift leadership responsibilities, and later moved into Team Leader positions. During this time, I was also managing significant health challenges, including undergoing dialysis. While those years were not always easy, they taught me resilience and determination, and I continued to develop both personally and professionally.

“In May 2010, I joined the Physiotherapy Team, where I spent ten amazing years. Working alongside therapy assistants and therapists gave me invaluable experience and helped shape the way I support people today. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn from highly skilled professionals and build my confidence in a different area of care.

“After ten years in therapy services, I accepted a trial post as a Referrals Coordinator. The timing was certainly memorable. I had only been in the role for around six weeks when the COVID-19 pandemic changed everything. Like many people working in health and social care, I found myself navigating completely new challenges at a time of great uncertainty.

“In 2023, I took on the role of Assistant Manager at Fen House. Due to changes in leadership within the service, I very quickly became heavily involved in the day-to-day running and strategic direction of the service. It was a steep learning curve, but one that provided enormous opportunities for growth.

“In December 2024, I became Service Manager at Fen House, a role I am incredibly proud to hold. The support I have received throughout my journey has been outstanding. I have been fortunate to work alongside managers who have believed in me, challenged me, and supported my development. Their guidance has played a huge part in helping me reach this point in my career.

“Looking back over the last twenty years, it is incredible to think that what began as a six-month stopgap before university became a lifelong career. I have had the privilege of supporting countless people, working with dedicated colleagues, overcoming personal challenges, and developing skills I never imagined I would possess.

“Fen House has been far more than a workplace. It has been a place of opportunity, growth, friendship, and purpose. I am incredibly grateful for the experiences I have had and the people I have met along the way.

“As for the next twenty years? Well, hopefully by then I will be enjoying a well-earned retirement. A person can live in hope!”

Thank you Michelle and all our incredible colleagues for the heart and dedication you show for the people we support at Brainkind, every day.
