Home / Paul’s achievement with swallowing
Everyday, the people we support and their incredible teams are making progress towards greater independence through rehabilitation, one step at a time.
One incredible example is Paul’s journey at Redford Court in Liverpool. He has been working with our Speech and Language Therapists, who play a crucial role in rehabilitation for people with dysphagia (swallowing problems).
Paul told us: “I would like to share one of my many achievements in my rehab journey. This achievement is a personal favourite of mine.
“I have been working with the Speech and Language Therapist and Physios at Redford Court to help me to drink from a cup and straw. I usually take drinks with support from a spoon, however using the Ark Sip Tip drinking system I can now drink from a straw! My main goal is to drink from this cup and straw when I am out in the community.”
Paul is a huge fan of live music and comedy – and had recently had a huge win towards his goal: “I love live music and comedy gigs. This year I have achieved my goal and used the cup and straw when watching Greg Davies. This made me feel normal, well more normal than ever. This is massive for me. Drinks taste so much better this way.”
Amy Green, Paul’s Speech and Language Therapist, shared more about his journey and the incredible effort he has put in:
“I am so proud of Paul’s achievements and his consistent motivation. We first attempted the straw about 18 months ago, but at that time, it was too challenging for Paul to achieve a consistent lip seal. Since then, he has worked extremely hard to strengthen his lips, and over the last year, his progress has been outstanding.
“When we introduced the new drinking system, we focused on developing a technique that worked well for him. As he continues to improve, we’ll keep refining it. Our current goal is to increase the time Paul spends drinking from the Ark Sip Tip, and in his own words, he is absolutely ‘smashing it’.”
Paul’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, expert support, and personalised rehabilitation. His story shines a light on the crucial role Speech and Language Therapists, and all our rehabilitators, play in helping people regain independence and confidence, so that they can enjoy the things they love and begin to rebuild their lives.
