Ralph the Border Collie Shortlisted for a BBC ‘Make a Difference’ Award

Ralph, a border collie therapy dog from Hitchin in Hertfordshire, has been shortlisted for a BBC ‘Make a Difference’ award.

Four-year-old Ralph, who is deaf and partially sighted, is a regular visitor to Brainkind Stagenhoe Park, a specialist neurological rehabilitation centre in Hitchin. He provides emotional support to people recovering from brain injuries and living with neurological conditions as part of the charity Therapy Dogs Nationwide.

The BBC’s ‘Make a Difference’ awards celebrate the “unsung heroes” who have a positive impact in local communities across the country. Ralph has been shortlisted as a finalist for the ‘Animal Award’ – one of eight categories up for grabs.

The ‘Animal Award’ recognises animals that have improved the life of an individual or group of people as well as people working with animals to improve animal welfare. The winner will be announced in September at award ceremonies held across the UK.

Ralph was the star of the show as a BBC film crew came to Stagenhoe Park on Monday 14 July to see first-hand the impact that he has on residents and staff. The visit will help the panel of judges decide on the eventual award winner.

Fiona Beeming, Volunteer Coordinator at Brainkind Stagenhoe Park, said:

“I am delighted that Ralph has been shortlisted for this amazing award. His visits bring so much pleasure and comfort to the people we support, lifting spirits, increasing confidence, and creating emotional connections. Animals can have an incredible impact on rehabilitation, and we see this whenever Ralph visits our residents. He would be a well-deserved winner of a ‘Make a Difference Award’ and everyone at Stagenhoe Park will be cheering him on.”

Ralph’s owner, Helen, added:

“Ralph loves his visits to Stagenhoe Park. He has formed a real bond with the residents and loves the attention and affection he gets there. It’s wonderful to see the positive difference he makes to people who are often going through difficult times, and I’m so proud that he has been shortlisted as a finalist for this award.”
