Home > News > Reconnecting with his roots: Mark’s trip to Lambeth fire station
Being a firefighter has always been a huge part of Mark’s identity. And the team at Kent House knew how significant this part of his life was to him.
Person-centred care is at the heart of everything we do at Brainkind. In that spirit, our incredible team at Kent House went above and beyond to organise an emotional trip to Lambeth Fire Station (LFB) for Mark as part of his rehabilitation and recovery.
“Firefighting is a huge part of Mark’s identity. Anyone that knows him will know he still wears his London Fire Brigade clothing. Of course, he came back from the trip with more. He will immediately show you pictures of his time as a fireman.”
There were lots of preparations in the lead-up to the day, including ensuring Mark had a wheelchair suitable for his needs, building up his tolerance in the vehicle due to travel sickness, managing mobility, and other considerations.
However, these preparations were more than worth it, Claire said, for the powerful impact it had on Mark:
“Mark ate his lunch in the mess, used the water cannon on his colleagues and, on arrival, immediately inspected the fire station to ensure his colleagues had maintained it to his standard in his absence. This was positive risk taking at its best.”
Mark had the best time visiting his old fire station and socialising with his former colleagues, thanks to the dedication of our team at Kent House.
“This was a dream come true for Mark.”
