Home > News > Disco in Leeds to raise money for Brainkind
So, we’re really excited that this weekend, an amazing retro disco is taking place in Leeds, to raise money for the people we support at our neurological centre, Brainkind Daniel Yorath House.
Andy Dean – who has a personal reason for choosing Brainkind – is organising the event. Andy has already raised nearly £1,000, before the disco even takes place!
We’d like to say a huge thank you to Andy, to everyone involved, and all the local businesses who have generously sponsored the event. Find out more below.
Andy shared about his reasons for organising the disco: “My life has taken me on a journey that has shaped who I am today, both personally and professionally.”
Andy lived in Australia for more than 20 years, where he owned and operated a printing company, established a haulage business and trained within the mining sector.
However, in 2021 he had an experience which changed everything. “My life changed dramatically when I was assaulted in a bar. I spent seven days in an induced coma, two weeks in intensive care, and four weeks in hospital.
“My recovery required me to learn to walk again, retake both my theory and driving tests, and undergo intensive cognitive therapy followed by a full year of rehabilitation.
“My journey has been shaped by challenge and perseverance.”
Andy returned to the UK in 2024 and now lives and works in Thirsk. He decided to lay on the ‘Retro Podger Disco – the Best Disco in Town’ to raise money for our Brainkind Daniel Yorath House service.
He has already raised nearly £1,000 from donations, with the disco taking place this Saturday:
Date: Saturday, 7 March Time: 7.30pm – midnight Where: The Podger, Garforth, Leeds
The headline DJ on the night will be Leigh Nicholson, who is the Matchday DJ and Announcer at Leeds United, and also presents on YorkMix FM Radio.
Some of our colleagues and some of the people we support will be going along, and it promises to be a brilliant night!
We’d like to say an enormous thank you to Andy and to all the local organisations who have sponsored the event, and donated raffle prizes.
