Home > News > BBC Look North visits Brainkind Neurological Centre York
Brainkind is a Community Partner for York Racecourse and as part of this we get to work with New Beginnings, a York based charity, that rehomes and retrains racehorses to be therapy horses. Remy is York Racecourse’s equine ambassador, as part of a long running partnership with New Beginnings.
Remy and Poppy the pony came to visit staff and people we support at Brainkind Neurological Centre York.
BBC Look North picked up that this was happening and were keen to come and see for themselves and meet Remy.
Remy and Poppy the pony brought smiles and laughter to people with acquired brain injury and other neurological conditions and staff at the hospital as well as the team from BBC Look North.
Many of the people we support do not have capacity to give media consent so after BBC Look North left Remy, Poppy and the team from New Beginnings stayed on to give as many people as possible the chance to interact with the horses.
They were very nice horses. I wish I could sit on them! I liked stroking them and I’d like them to visit us again. Karl, Brainkind Neurological Centre York. The partnership working between Brainkind, New Beginnings and York Racecourse is so refreshing and it is so positive to see the benefits to people with acquired brain injury and other neurological conditions that we saw first hand today. Jonathan Reed, Journalist, BBC Look NorthIt was an absolute delight to have Remy and Poppy from New Beginnings visit us at BNCY. The smiles it brought to the faces of the people we support were obvious for everyone to see. I think having sessions such as this on the program provides the people we support with an experience that is enjoyable and memorable. This shared experience allows the staff to have positive and meaningful conversations over a fun memory for weeks to come. As this was their second visit it was notable that people were excited to see Remy and Poppy again. Miles Rogish, Consultant Neuropsychologist, BrainkindThere was a real buzz yesterday at Brainkind Neurological Centre York as lots of the people we support met and have fun with Remy and Poppy. We laughed and even went nose to nose with horses. All the staff enjoyed themselves too and we were discussing the theraputic benefits that being with horses can bring to people with an acquired brain injury. Hayley Wild, Speech and Language Therapist, BrainkindWe are grateful for the support of York Racecourse. It provides opportunities for a breadth of partnerships from directly raising funds to experiencing the wellbeing benefits of meeting horses like Remy and Poppy. Tracy Calcraft, Head of Fundraising, Brainkind.

About Brainkind
Brainkind (formerly The Disabilities Trust) is the UK’s leading charity helping people to reach their best potential after a brain injury. With over 40 years’ experience and expertise in brain injury and neurorehabilitation, we understand how a brain injury can challenge every aspect of life. Our services provide a range of treatment, support, and care for people with brain injuries and other neurological conditions.
We support people with immediate rehabilitation following hospital treatment. We do this by helping them regain lost skills or to find ways of compensating for lost abilities, as well as providing long-term care.
We are committed to providing personalised, compassionate treatment and care. Led by clinicians, our services include physical and cognitive rehabilitation, occupational and educational therapy. We also offer emotional support to empower the person we support and their families.
With experts including physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists and more, our teams provide the care and treatment you need, helping the people we support to live more independently or to meet your goals, whatever they might be.
