Home > News > Artists at Victoria House take part in new exhibition in Hull
We’re proud to create opportunities for the people we support to let their creative talents shine. Arts and crafts projects help people to practise their skills, bring social interaction, boost confidence, and enhance wellbeing.
So, when Victoria House – our specialist residential care service in Hull – was asked to be part of a new exhibition opening this weekend, we jumped at the chance to take part.
‘Cannon, Crown, and Clover: An exhibition of creative work inspired by Hull’s South Blockhouse’ opens on Saturday, 9 August. The exhibition, curated by Square Peg and funded by Hull Maritime and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, ‘celebrates the creativity and talents of Hull’s young people and community groups’ – and features stunning artwork by some of the people we support.
Workshops with local artists
Angela Hardie, Vocational Recreational and Activities Coordinator at Victoria House, told us how our residents took part in a series of workshops over several months, where they worked with local artists to create artwork for the exhibition.
“The workshops centred around the theme of medieval maps, the history of the site, and how it looked. People could use clay, model making, print, paint, or more to create their work. We’ve been part of a medieval feast display.
“It was totally awesome for the people we support to have been involved and chosen. To see their achievements and artwork come together in the gallery, for all the visitors in Hull and beyond to come along to the exhibition, is brilliant. There was excitement and lots of happy faces today. Colin (pictured below) was amazed when he saw his pie with the goose on top. I am so proud of them.”
“It’s so wonderful to have taken part in this.”
Our artists were delighted to attend a private viewing at the gallery this week, with their families and staff from Victoria House.
Lynda, who took part, said: “This is amazing, it’s so wonderful to have taken part in this – and seeing our hard work displayed along with everyone else in the community is lovely.”
Thank you to Square Peg and Hull Maritime for giving us the chance to be part of this wonderful project!
The exhibition runs at Pier Street – SPACE Pop-up, Fruit Market, Hull Marina, from Saturday, 9 August until Thursday, 21 August – open daily from 10.30am – 2.30pm. Entry is free, and everyone is welcome.
